One amazing aspect of music – or art in general, really – is that so much of it can be left up to interpretation. Lyrics can seem to be saying one thing or another, and vocal styles can really set the tone for a band, but the absence of lyrics in Set & Setting’s work is not something to be counted as a loss. These post-metal instrumentalists create atmospheric and dramatic imagery all without the use of words, which is no easy feat. Stream “Coping” below, a track from Set & Setting’s album A Vivid Memory out September 2nd and currently available for pre-order on Prosthetic Records.

What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)?
We are from St. Petersburg, Florida
How did the band come together? How long has it been?
The band started around 2007 as a studio project by our original bass player and myself, it has slowly grown with the acquisition of multiple members and member changes into what you see today.
How have you grown since you started?
We have grown tremendously. We started with the idea of a Pink Floyd-esque band, but with the growth of us as people and musically we have transformed into our own style and sound.
What sets you apart from other bands?
I like to think that we separate ourselves from other bands with the concept of having no musical boundaries. We write music, and we don’t like to limit ourselves from doing anything that feels natural. We will go as heavy and dark as we want, and will go in the other direction if we want to as well. There are a wide variety of sounds that we like to explore, and we strive to do it in an original way.
What’s the best part about being in your band?
The best part about being in Set and Setting is that I can create something. Writing music and see it grow from an idea to a real working thing with other people is very satisfying. I’d probably go insane if I didn’t write music and create. It’s the best thing in the world.
